Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien is regarded as the architect of modern Brunei. It was he who steered the nation safety through the turbulent years following WWII, establishing the foundation for the nation's independence and sovereignty.
It sits on an artificial lagoon near the Brunei River in Kampong Ayer, which is appropriately enough, known as a "water village." A structure in the water that resembles a ship was at one time used for official state ceremonies.
